Boxing body gets fat R10m cash injection

South African Amateur Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) president Andile Mofu was philosophical in his reaction to his body's whopping R10-million financial injection from sports minister Fikile Mbalula's department.

Mbalula made the announcement in Joburg yesterday, declaring that the cash-strapped amateur boxing federation would get help from the government.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," said Mofu, who explained that the windfall would help them help boxers' dreams, such as preparing for the Rio 2016 Olympics. "We do not have a team because qualifiers will be in Cameroon in March next year," he explained.

But Mofu said his federation's main focus was to win medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted by Durban.

"Open boxing has been struggling financially. What the minister has done is highly appreciated as it will enable us to realise our dreams. This financial injection will pave the way for next year."

Said Mbalula: "We support all the sporting federations. Sanabo is not the only one. Yes, we have put aside R10-million to support boxing development so that we produce amateurs that will represent our country in the Olympics."
