Johnson not getting carried away by form

Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson has resisted the urge to talk up his side's Absa Premiership title chances.

But he admits their impressive start to the season is reminiscent of Dikwena's runners-up finish three years ago in his first stint.

Johnson returned to the club in April and was successful in helping them escape relegation with only eight league matches remaining. Dikwena are unbeaten following four wins and two draws from six matches, making them log leaders, with the big guns surprisingly struggling for form.

"To be top of the log at this time of the season is a bonus for us, but we know that a lot people will start talking and eyebrows will be raised. As a club, where we are now is a culmination of a very good pre-season and having a good board of directors," the coach explained.

"It is definitely too early to talk about whether we have the necessary ingredients to go all the way. I would be putting the cart before the horse if I spoke about that. What I can speak about is building the brand, the technique and a good crop of young players, like when I played my 15-year-old [Kobamelo Kodisang] against Golden Arrows. Those are the things I thrive on and are equivalent to winning the league."

Johnson is no stranger to the remarkable start to the campaign, having been in charge of Dikwena when they finished one point behind champions Kaizer Chiefs during the 2012-13 season, a run that led to the coach being lured away by SuperSport United.

Dikwena beat SuperSport 3-1 at the weekend.

"We took two steps forward back then and a few more when we won two cups in one season [under Allan Freese, who was replaced by Johnson in April following a string of poor results]."

Stars next host Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout on Sunday.
