Tete gets boost for his profile

Makazole Tete must use the defence of his IBO Inter-Continental flyweight belt tonight against Mexican Armando Hernandez Torres at Orient Theatre as a step towards being as recognised as his brother Zolani.

The diminutive fighter, 30, has already held the SA, WBA Pan African, IBO International belts, but he still remains an enigma - especially outside his home town, East London.

Promoter Ayanda Matiti of Xaba Promotions and Events has presented him with a golden opportunity to build a high profile by making him headline for his star-studded boxing tournament that will also feature crowd favourite and knockout artist Mabhuti Sinyabi, exciting fighters Sydney Maluleke, Xolani Mcotheli, Sibusiso Zingange, Mfusi Maxhayi, Aphiwe Mboyiya and veteran Bongani Mahlangu.

Tete is undefeated after 14 fights, while Torres, 34, has 21 wins against 14 losses. Sinyabi, who boasts 19 knockouts from 25 wins against three losses, will defend his IBO Inter-Continental featherweight belt against Maluleke, the former SA featherweight champion, from Giyani. Mcotheli, a former SA lightweight champion - will take on Vusumzi Tyatyeka from Khayelitsha for the vacant IBO International belt while former SA featherweight holder Mboyiya will oppose Zingange from Pretoria for the IBO All Africa junior lightweight strap.

Mahlangu will put his national junior featherweight belt against Maxhayi. The bout between Sinyabi and Maluleke will be televised live on SABC 2 from 9.30pm while fans will watch Tete live in action from 11pm.

The rest of the action will begin at 8pm.
