Eastern Cape promoter to make Limpopo History

ON ATTACK: Promoter Ayanda Matiti
ON ATTACK: Promoter Ayanda Matiti

History will be made in Limpopo this weekend when a professional boxing tournament takes place at a soccer stadium.

Top Eastern Cape promoter Ayanda Matiti - who trades under the banner of Xaba Boxing Promotions and Events said yesterday that he would stage a six-championship event at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday night.

Matiti said his tournament - which will consist of four IBO regional title fights, a SA championship and a provincial title fight - is the continuation of his Night of Champions celebrations.

It will be staged to honour political heroes and heroines.

The promoter, who is responsible for the career of Limpopo province's only current world boxing champion IBO welterweight Tsiko "Cruel Junior" Mulovhedzi, said: "I want to make the best of this tournament and deliver quality to the people of Limpopo. I intend to give it my best shot as if I was doing it back home in East London."

He has enabled under-appreciated yet capable fighter Makazole "The Professor" Tete from Mdantsane to carve a niche for himself in a sport where his younger brother - former IBF junior bantamweight champion Zolani "Last Born" Tete - is the more talked-about pugilist in the country.

Makazole has already held the SA, WBA Pan African, IBO International belts in the flyweight division but the current IBO Inter-Continental champion from Mdantsane still remains an enigma.

Makazole, trained by respected veteran mentor Dowi Mzini, is undefeated after 14 fights. His defence against a former WBC Silver champion with 14 wins from 35 bouts will be televised live on SABC 2 from 11pm.

The main supporting bout pits Tete's stablemate Mabhuti "Macman" Sinyabi in the defence of the IBO Inter-Continental featherweight belt against Sydney "The Skeleton" Maluleke from Malamulele in Limpopo. The former SA featherweight champion is based in Gauteng under accomplished trainer Bernie Pailman. This bout will also be aired live, from 9.30pm.
