Tlolane stunner denies Amakhosi a win

It was an Absa Premiership match that promised lots of goals from two attack-minded clubs, but in the end the goalkeepers of Polokwane City and Kaizer Chiefs only picked the ball out of their nets just once.

City, who held Amakhosi to a goalless draw at this venue last season, made life difficult for Steve Komphela's men and walked off the pitch with a valuable point after Puleng Tlolane cancelled out Eric Mathoho's first half effort as the match ended 1-1 in front of a good crowd.

After their 4-0 mauling of Free State Stars at the weekend, Amakhosi fans arrived in high spirits, hoping their side could repeat the performance and give a City side that is notorious for conceding soft goals a hiding.

However, poor finishing, trying to walk the ball into the net and decision-making in the final third let them down.

The visitors started very well, eager to unsettle their opponents who came into the game on the back of a 3-0 drubbing at University of Pretoria.

Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala, who scored a stunner against Ea Lla Koto, dilly-dallied in the box after a cross from George Lebese arrived at his feet and City were able to clear the ball to safety.

Lebese and Tsepo Masilela were a huge threat for City on the left flank, with their pace and skill, but their crossing into the area was not of the highest quality.

On the half hour mark, however, Amakhosi finally broke the deadlock as Mathoho pounced on a loose ball in the area to give the visitors a lead that would only last till the hour mark.

Amakhosi conceded their first league goal 17 minutes into the second period and there was very little goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune could do about the effort from one of City's most prized possessions, Tlolane.

Tlolane, scorer of 11 league goals last season, opened his account for the season with a well-taken shot after Randy Ngobe's sweetly struck long-range effort came off the crossbar and back into play for his teammate to finish.

lAt the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Chippa United were the biggest winners of the evening as they hammered 10-man AmaTuks 4-0 to register their first win of the season.

Mark Mayambela, Erick Chipeta, Nkosinathi Mthiyane and Lerato Manzini all scored for the Chilli Boyz, who moved into midtable in the standings.
