Khumalo picks up where he left off with United

Despite only agreeing to sign for SuperSport United on the eve of their first official match of the season - an MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Bidvest Wits last night - the PSL still excites Bongani Khumalo, his agent Glyn Binkin said yesterday.

"That's why he has signed a three-year contract. It was the [same] league that gave him the platform in the first place," added Binkin.

Khumalo, 28, rejoins the Tshwane side four years after they sold him to Tottenham Hotspurs for a staggering R15-million. However, the defender failed to make an official appearance for the English Premier League club during his time there.

"He's considered signing for a couple of months now because he was out of contract at Spurs and, most importantly, knew he wouldn't qualify for a work permit to stay in the UK," said Binkin.

"A number of opportunities were presented but in the end he decided to pick up where he left off with SuperSport when they were winning league titles and trophies. Yes, England has always been his dream but the work permit situation made it very difficult. He's been in various leagues there and has also been to Greece, but when a chance to play for his old club came, he took it."

Like Tefu Mashamaite, with his failed pursuit to land a contract with Major League Soccer side New York City FC, Binkin said Khumalo snubbed offers from the US because he would not have been a marquee signing. This means he would have had to take a significant pay-cut.

Khumalo's return to Matsatsantsa perhaps makes him the club's biggest recruit ahead of the new PSL season, especially after coach Gordon Igesund criticised his defence for leaking goals in the previous campaign.

"He is a young player with a lot of potential and a player who will undoubtedly strengthen our squad and add a significant goal threat," said chief executive Stan Matthews.
