Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala and his teammates are determined to give new coach Steve Komphela a perfect start in his first official match as their quest to defend the MTN8 begins today.

Komphela has already established himself as a father figure at Naturena and Tshabalala is hoping the knowledge the coach has of his former club will give Amakhosi the upper hand at FNB Stadium tonight (7.30 kickoff).

"Maritzburg are a tough team to play against. We played against them last season in the league and they beat us. It left a bitter taste in our mouths. We know that they will show hunger and they will show a desire to win the game. [But] we are in the right frame of mind and we know what to expect from them," Tshabalala said. "The coach will be playing against his former team and I am sure it will be special and emotional for him. It's a game we need to play and win for him."

Tshabalala added: "We enjoy working with the coach. He is very approachable. He makes players feel comfortable. There is a time for jokes and there is a time for business. He knows where to draw the line."

Amakhosi scored 10 goals in four matches and did not concede on their way to lifting the MTN8 last season.

It was a fantastic cup run and a perfect start to the campaign as they went on to lift the Absa Premiership title. A similar start this season is sure to inspire another incredible campaign.

"Last season we had a great run and it was a tough season. This season is going to be even tougher," Tshabalala said. "But all is well in terms of preparations. The game against Maritzburg is a big one and we want to retain the trophy. To do that we need to overcome the first hurdle. We are all looking forward to the game."

Left-back Tsepo Masilela is an injury doubt for today's clash. Komphela could give defender Mulomowandau Mathoho a run after he recovered from a toe injury.
