Chiefs keep Khune, Masango waiting

A "clash of schedules" led to yesterday's much-anticipated meeting between Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung and the clubless duo of Itumeleng Khune and Mandla Masango being postponed.

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Khune and winger Masango were expected to sit down with Motaung to discuss their return to the club following their failed negotiations to extend their contracts soon after the end of last season.

It was reported that the two players were keen to renegotiate, but were told to comeback yesterday.

They will now have to wait a bit longer to learn their fate.

"The meeting is not cancelled, but postponed," said Vina Maphosa, the Chiefs spokesman.

"All the relevant parties should be available later in the week because there was a clash of schedules.

"I can't obviously reveal to the public who exactly could not be available on the day, but the discussions will still go ahead."

Khune and Masango remain in the hunt for clubs with less than a week before the Premier League campaign kicks off next week.

Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung labelled them, along with defender Tefu Mashamaite, the Amakhosi captain during their championship-winning season, "greedy" and "disrespectful" at a press conference where it was announced the trio would be leaving.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi also confirmed yesterday that veteran Siphiwe "Shabba" Tshabalala would replace Mashamaite as skipper. The midfielder is no stranger to the captain's armband, having served as Khune's deputy in the past and will now permanently assume the responsibility.

Tshabalala also wore the armband when Chiefs played in the King's Cup in Swaziland.

Siboniso Gaxa, Willard Katsande, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Lorenzo Gordinho form the club's "captain's committee", it was confirmed yesterday.
