SuperSport close in on Khumalo deal

SuperSport United hope to successfully conclude negotiations with former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo in the next few days even though there are mixed signals about the experienced centre back's plans.

Khumalo featured for the Tshwane-based club in two matches in the weekend's Cape Town Cup and afterwards coach Gordon Igesund said negotiations were ongoing.

"Stan Matthews [the club's chief executive officer] has been in discussions with him and of course I would be delighted to get him in," said Igesund after the tournament on Sunday.

The negotiations were also confirmed yesterday from Denmark by Khumalo's agent, Glynn Binkin, who said: "Talks are advanced but there are still things that need to be ironed out from both parties."

The 28-year-old Khumalo's potential return to the Premier Soccer League comes as something of a surprise after stating just weeks ago that he wanted to continue his career overseas, despite coming to the end of his contract with Totten- ham Hotspur.

Khumalo, who never played for Spurs in a competitive match during his four year-deal, no longer qualifies for a work permit in the UK.

Spurs loaned him to Preston North End, Reading, PAOK Salonika in Greece, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United.

Should Khumalo sign for SuperSport, it would represent some rather tidy business for the club. They sold Khumalo to Spurs in 2011 for £1.5-million, roughly R15-million at the time or close to R30-million at today's exchange rate. He returns free, save for the personal terms he will seek from the club.

Khumalo won the first of his 42 Bafana Bafana caps in his first season of top-flight football in 2008 after joining SuperSport from the University of Pretoria.
