Why spiderman is back to his roots

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has lifted the lid on the return to the club of legen- dary goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

The Alexandra-born keeper was one of Mamelodi Sundowns' big signings when club president Patrice Motsepe took over at the club.

Baloyi's departure left many Amakhosi supporters disappointed, and some even labelled him disloyal for parting ways with a side that had developed him into one of the country's finest goalkeepers.

But after his playing career, Baloyi found himself out in the cold and has since returned to Naturena.

Motaung said "life's challenges" may have forced Baloyi's hand and that they welcomed him back with open arms as they wanted to further develop him.

"He has been talking to us for some time. Obviously, life is full of challenges, so we cannot hammer people and punish them. God is the only one who punishes. He came back and humbled himself.

"Rainer Dinkelacker [goalkeeper coach] also recommended him as the person he thought he could help develop [into a keeper coach]," Motaung said.

He added that after leaving Chiefs, Baloyi went through his fair share of experiences and when he met with club chairman Kaizer Motaung, he was presented with an opportunity to work with the club's goalkeepers.

"The chairman is a very humble man who has managed to achieve what he did by working well with other people.

"Brian had a contract when he left. He made a decision at the time that suited him. He has had his fair share of experiences in life. He has an opportunity now to contribute to the team because I think his heart and his spirit have always been with Chiefs," Motaung said.

Motaung took time to clarify an issue Chiefs supporters have been asking about - how a "disloyal" former player like Baloyi could be welcomed back while someone like former midfielder Thabo Mooki was left out of the club's structures.

"That is what people do not know. The club has plans for Thabo and other legends like Cyril [Nzama]. I don't think he wants to go into coaching. Unlike people like Ace [Khuse], Thabo has his own plans, but we have plans for him," Motaung said.
