Komphela led United to an historic top-eight place last season, one of the reasons the Chiefs hierarchy made him the first local coach to hold the forte at the club in over two decades. But now the Free State-born coach's must prove his credentials, with his first challenge being to help Amakhosi ease into the semifinals of the R8-million first-prize competition at the expense of his old employers.
A furore engulfed Komphela after he handed his resignation to Maritzburg last month, with the Team of Choice's board demanding compensation, and the quarterfinal meeting between the sides, set for FNB Stadium on August 5, might well be a grudge match.
The MTN8 is one of two competitions Chiefs fans will expect Komphela to defend. But other quarterfinalists will set off on a mission to dethrone the Naturena side.
One of the most eye-catching last eight fixtures is between Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town, taking place at Orlando Stadium on August 4. The Soweto giants clashed in last year's final, with Chiefs edging it 1-0.
Semifinals, which will be played over two legs as usual, will take place on August 15 and 16; and August 29 and 30. The final is set for September 19.
