Overseas clubs still keen on Itu

There are still overseas clubs interested in Itumeleng Khune, his agent Dan Lichman maintains, though any discussions with them will depend on the outcome of the goalkeeper's talks with Kaizer Chiefs this week.

There had been speculation Khune and Lichman had parted ways, or that the latter had left the Triple S Sports agency that represents the Bafana Bafana keeper.

Lichman confirmed yesterday he had left the Manchester-based company that also handles Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney, but said both he and Triple S would continue to be Khune's agents.

The agent said via SMS yesterday that there were still overseas opportunities for Khune.

"I have left the company [Triple S] for other opportunities," Lichman's text message read.

"We both continue to work with Khune. He has opportunities in Europe but is waiting on the outcome of a meeting with Chiefs to see if they can reach an agreement. He is waiting on Bobby Motaung [Chiefs football manager]."

Motaung said he did not want to comment on the talks with Khune. The goalkeeper could not be reached for comment.

Amakhosi announced last month they would not renew the contracts of their captain Khune, Premier Soccer League player of the season Tefu Mashamaite and winger Mandla Masango, claiming the players wanted exorbitant packages.

Mystery continues to surround the futures of the trio. Masango has not been contactable for days despite several attempts by Sowetan.

The player and his agent, Walter Mokoena, split after Masango could not agree terms with Chiefs.

The winger is believed to also be meeting Motaung this week with a view to re-starting negotiations on a new contract back at Naturena.

It emerged last week that Masango also recently turned down strong offers from Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits.

Mashamaite was unfortunate that a deal with Major League Soccer side New York City FC fell through at the last minute late last week.

Chiefs returned last week from their traditional pre-season camp at the University of North West's High Performance Centre in Potchefstroom, culminating in their appearance at the King's Super Cup in Swaziland on Saturday.

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has said he wants to play two more pre-season friendlies before meeting Orlando Pirates in the sold-out Carling Black Label Cup at FNB Stadium on August 1.
