Dean Furman has been hailed as "fantastic" by Blackburn Rovers coach Gary Bowyer, but will not be joining the English Championship side, who do not have space in their budget for the Bafana Bafana captain.

Furman had a lengthy trial at Rovers and scored in their friendly victory over Accrington Stanley. He also went on a training camp to Portugal with the side.

But Bowyer said this week he had reluctantly decided not to take on the midfielder, as well as fellow trialist Giles Coke, after the club signed the French pair of Sacha Petschi and Bangaly Fode Koita.

"Unfortunately, they've been with us and obviously we had to come to a decision," Bowyer told reporters. "We've made the decision not to go with either of them due to the restrictions that we're under.

"They're very similar to players that we already have, but the pair of them have been fantastic. "If the circumstances had been different for us then it might have been different for them."

Furman said he was "working on a few things" but was unclear of his next move.

"We are just playing a bit of a waiting game at the moment before it all falls into place," he said.

Furman is on the hunt for a new club after leaving third-tier Doncaster Rovers at the end of last season having rejected a new contract offer from the club.

The Bafana Bafana skipper has set his ambitions on playing at a higher level in Europe and would have welcomed a return to the Championship with Blackburn.

Reports surfaced in May that he was on the wanted list of Kaizer Chiefs, but the Cape Town-born midfielder made it clear he sees his future in Europe.

Having played for Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers and lower league English sides Oldham Athletic and Bradford City, Furman has also spent one season in the Championship.
