Game-hungry goalkeeper wants out of Downs

Belgian goalkeeper Glenn Verbauwhede is keen to leave Mamelodi Sundowns and says the Chloorkop side attempted to bring in Bafana Bafana glove-man Darren Keet as his replacement.

The 30-year-old, who has yet to play for Sundowns after two years in South Africa and who made just seven starts on loan at Free State Stars last season, says he wants to resume his career in Belgium.

And he has let slip that Sundowns tried to do a deal with his former side, Kortrijk, to bring Keet back to South Africa, but that appears to have failed.

"My club wants to loan, sell or exchange me with the South African goalkeeper at Kortrijk, Darren Keet," Verbauwhede told Belgian media.

"I would like to go so I can see my children again. It's been six months."

Keet endured a difficult second half of the season in 2014-2015 after a poor Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea saw him lose his first-team place and spend much of the rest of the campaign on the bench.

He did win back that place in the final few games of the campaign and received a further boost to his first-team chances over the weekend when the player who replaced him, Frenchman Laurent Henkinet, moved to Waasland-Beveren.

Verbauwhede is one of four goalkeepers at Sundowns.

He must compete with former Bafana goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, Zambian Afcon winner Kennedy Mweene and Uganda international Dennis Onyango.

The latter was the first choice for much of last season and Mweene has already said that he too was contemplating an exit from Chloorkop as he seeks greater game time.

Verbauwhede previously spent three seasons on loan at Kortrijk and was a first-team regular before being replaced by Keet in 2011.
