Bafana gear up for Angola

A wasteful Bafana Bafana edged Mauritius 2-0 in the second leg of the African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier at Anjalay Stadium yesterday.

Bafana will now face Angola, who beat Swaziland, in the next round for a place in the tournament in Rwanda next year.

Free agent Mandla Masango, who has been one of Bafana's ever present players since Shakes Mashaba took over last year, and Bloemfontein Celtic defender Wandisile Letlabika scored in the last 20 minutes of the match to help secure a 5-0 aggregate victory over a lacklustre Mauritian side.

The first leg ended 3-0 in Dobsonville a fortnight ago despite cancelled training sessions caused by player withdrawals just two days before the game.

There were also withdrawals ahead of the second leg, but the team had an entire week to prepare for yesterday's tie and Mashaba said they spent most of the time working on finishing.

However, they were not as clinical in front of goal in the second leg, and the coach must be wondering what more needs to be done to get his players to convert the many chances they create.

Against a stronger opponent, Bafana would have been punished for their wasteful ways. Siphelele Ntshangase, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Gift Motupa had shots on goal in the first half but none of them could get their efforts on target.

The visitors in total had eight shots at goal in the first half and only one on target. Ntshangase struck the crossbar on the hour mark and then about 10 minutes later, when it looked like Bafana would walk off the pitch without a goal, Masango delivered.

The visitors doubled their lead six minutes from time and it was Letlabika who scored his first senior national team goal, netting from close range after he was set up by substitute Ndumiso Mabena.

Bafana will play Angola, who beat Swaziland 4-2 on aggregate, over two legs in October to determine who plays in the Chan competition in January.

Mauritius did have their chances yesterday, but they were not composed in the final third of the pitch.
