Safa has no issue with Rantie for no-show

Striker Tokelo Rantie has escaped punishment for failing to turn up for Bafana Bafana's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia earlier this month.

Rantie, who was called up to the crucial opening qualifier for Gabon 2017 on June 13 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, was on honeymoon at that time.

The penetrative striker's presence was missed as SA were unable to score and were held to a 0-0 draw.

Safa communications head Dominic Chimhavi said Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba eventually managed to contact the AFC Bournemouth striker and the issue was resolved.

"The coach did eventually get hold of him, and he understood the player's position. There is no issue over Rantie," Chimhavi said.

Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said the association had been awaiting feedback from Mashaba on whether action should be taken.

"I've left that matter basically to the coach, to see if it remains an internal Bafana matter or should be escalated to me," Mumble said.

"But typically you don't want to go and make exceptions because otherwise there will be too many exceptions."

Mumble said the breakdown in communication was not Mashaba's fault.

"... It is for the team manager [Barney Kujane] and anyone else involved in the follow-up process to make sure players are available or not," Mumble said.
