Chiefs fail to turn up at hearing on Abraw dispute

Kaizer Chiefs did not attend a conciliation hearing at the Premier Soccer League offices yesterday on the future of their new signing, Camaldine Abraw, pictured.

Bloemfontein Celtic are contesting the signing of the Togolese striker, who Phunya SeleSele believe they contracted before Chiefs pounced with a three-year deal.

Amakhosi subsequently announced Abraw as one of five new signings at a press conference at their Naturena base on June 23.

PSL communications manager Lux September said Celtic's representatives attended the conciliation hearing, but no one arrived from Chiefs.

In a statement on their website yesterday, Celtic said: "Celtic continues to affirm its stand on the matter and will explore the available avenues to contest the case."

The matter will now go to the PSL's dispute resolution chamber. Yesterday's conciliation hearing was aimed at finding an amicable agreement to avoid going to the DRC.

Abraw's deal with Celtic is in dispute. When he signed a pre-contract for Celtic last season, the player is believed to have been unaware he had exercised an option to renew his deal for a year with them.

Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung would not comment on the Abraw case or other issues surrounding Amakhosi in the news recently.

Motaung had said last week that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and winger Mandla Masango had returned to Naturena trying to restart negotiations on failed contract renewal talks, and that the duo had been given time to go home and think clearly about their futures.

Although Khune and Masango's contracts came to an end yesterday, Motaung was not interested in commenting on the negotiations, or if there were any taking place.

“We are not discussing anything. We are done. If you want to know about Khune or Masango’s futures you need to call them. They know their future‚” Motaung said.

“I have no comment on any of those issues right now. I have no comment on the Maritzburg issue. Tim Sukazi is an agent‚ he is dealing with that. Call him.

“I am going on holiday now. The Abraw matter is in the hands of our legal representation. The PSL can comment on that. When we have a story for you we will call you. I have no stories right now.”
