Motsepes hand over cheque for prosthetic leg

Finally Nomonde Tete‚ the mother of boxing stars Zolani and Makazole‚ will get her prosthetic leg‚ thanks to the Motsepe Foundation of billionaire mining magnate Patrice Motsepe.

Motsepe’s wife Precious on Tuesday handed over a cheque of R110000 to Nomonde in a well-attended ceremony at the Mdantsane NU 12 community hall‚ which is a stone’s throw from the Tete family house.

Zolile‚ the father to the Zolani and Makazole‚ sat close to his wife.

Also in attendance was Patrice Motsepe‚ Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle‚ Buffalo City mayor Alfred Mtsi‚ MEC for sport Pemmy Majodina‚ a number of promoters and former and current boxing champions.

The Motsepe Foundation has pledged millions to education as well as soccer development at junior level.

Precious said she and Patrice were coming back from an overseas trip when they heard a radio interview during which Zolani Tete said he would use his earnings from the defence of his IBF junior-bantamweight crown against Paul Butler in England in March to buy a prosthetic for his 59-year-old mother who lost her leg to diabetes two years back.

“We felt we needed to assist because we associate with his values‚” she said.

“We are very proud of Zolani as well as his siblings. We also want to thank his parents — mother and father — because they produced the champion.”

Promoter Ayanda Matiti donated R33000 towards the manufacturing of Nomonde’s prosthetic leg.

Patrice then delivered the sweetest message to ears of the gathering: “We will donate R1-million towards the development of boxing here. Former boxers and promoters must meet next week and tell us exactly how the money will be utilised.”
