Bucs contract talks on hold until after Confed clash

Orlando Pirates will only make a decision on the future of veteran captain Lucky Lekgwathi and other players nearing the end of their contracts after the weekend's African Confederation Cup match.

This was revealed by Bucs administration manager Floyd Mbele yesterday.

Lekgwathi was given a contract extension at the start of the season but spent the entire campaign out because of injury.

After a career spanning 13 seasons at the club, there is considerable interest in what is next for the tough-tackling 38-year-old, who was a fearsome leader and loyal club man.

"It stands to reason that we must first get this game out of the way and then we will be able to sit down and reflect and plan for the next season," said Mbele.

"This is when we will decide on Lucky and others in a similar situation."

The Buccaneers host AS Kaloum of Guinea in the second leg of the Confederation Cup fourth-round match, having already established a 2-0 lead from the first leg.

The game is being played at 3pm on Saturday at Milpark Stadium in Johannesburg.

The match has been moved to Milpark as Orlando Stadium, Pirates' home, is currently undergoing maintenance and is unavailable for the whole month, according to the club's website.

Pirates usually host their African club competition matches on a Saturday night, but Mbele said the daytime kickoff was to avoid a clash with Saturday night's television coverage from Berlin of the Uefa Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus.
