Bafana star set to move to England from FC Twente

Kamohelo Mokotjo is on the brink of a move to English Championship team Brentford from Dutch side FC Twente.

The two clubs are in advanced negotiations for the transfer of the 24-year-old Bafana Bafana star‚ with the only stumbling block an English work permit for the midfielder.

Brentford unveiled Dutch national Marinus Dijkhuizen as their new coach yesterday (MONDAY)‚ and he is set to make Mokotjo his first signing as cash-strapped Twente seek to cash in on his excellent season in the Eredivisie.

Mokotjo‚ deemed not good enough for the national team under Shakes Mashaba‚ has been one of the leading midfielders in Holland for the last two seasons and could be set for a move to England‚ albeit the second-tier.

Brentford came close to promotion to the Premier League this season when they reached the play-offs‚ but were beaten in the semifinals by Middlesbrough.

Brentford would be Mokotjo’s fourth club in three years since he left Feyenoord in 2013 for PEC Zwolle.

He excelled there and was snapped up a year later by FC Twente‚ a club that he thought would offer more of a chance of silverware‚ but one which has been crippled by financial issues.

That has now forced them to sell a number of their better players‚ with Mokotjo possibly one of the first out the door.

Brentford hail from London and play at Griffin Park‚ a cosy 12300-seater stadium.

The club was formed 125 years ago and had their most successful spell in the 1930s when they were regularly near the top of the league.

It has been a hard slog in the lower division for much of the time since‚ though their fifth-place finish in the Championship last season is a sign perhaps that their fortunes are about to improve.

They have yet to win a major trophy and their main rivals are Fulham and Queen’s Park Rangers.

Somewhat ironically for Mokotjo‚ they also play in the red and white of former side Feyenoord.
