Hunt sweetened wits deal for Klate

Shortly after announcing his two-year deal with Bidvest Wits on social network Twitter yesterday, Daine Klate admitted the surprise move was partly motivated by money.

Talks between the player and SuperSport United broke down early last week, fuelling speculation regarding the winger's future.

Klate joined the Tshwane outfit on a six-month loan deal from Orlando Pirates and it was expected that he would agree to a long-term contract starting July 1.

"Obviously I couldn't pass on the opportunity to work with [coach] Gavin [Hunt] again, and when he spoke to me about coming to join him at Wits, that sweetened the deal," Klate said.

"But you must know your value. Wits came in with a very good offer that I couldn't say no to. It was a much, much better offer [than SuperSport's] and it made the decision easy for me.

"Yes, I am going there to play because I am wanted, but it is also about moving for the right amount of money."

The five-time Premier League winner with SuperSport and Pirates became The Clever Boys' first signing ahead of next season and will be reunited with Hunt, who he played under when SuperSport clinched three successive titles between 2008 and 2010.

Asked if he felt he didn't burn bridges by making the move to Wits, Klate said: "It really was about the good offer that I got and couldn't say no to.

"I didn't see myself leaving until then."

Klate will also team up with goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs at Wits.

The duo were part of Pirates' treble-winning side under then coach Ruud Krol as the Buccaneers dominated the domestic league for two seasons in a row.

"I've shared a change room with Moeneeb before and I will be doing it again. That means I'm not making a huge adjustment at all. The club basically has a lot of people that I have worked with over the years," Klate explained.
