They survived sleeping on ''wooden planks" and dubious decisions by the referee in Gabon, and now Banyana Banyana are back home ready to finish off the job.

Vera Pauw's players began life without legendary striker Portia Modise on a positive note, beating Gabon 3-2 in Libreville in a 2016 Rio Olympics qualifier at the weekend despite hostile conditions.

They host the Gabonese team at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday (3pm) in the return leg, confident they can progress to the penultimate round of qualifiers.

"It was a frustrating trip. We were short of rooms and players had to sleep on wooden planks. We only sorted it out the next day. And during the game we had 12 offsides, 10 of which were not offside. We have the video of the game," said Pauw after yesterday's morning training session in Johannesburg.

"Now we have to control the game and make sure we get the result," she added.

Banyana knew nothing about Gabon before the first leg, but now they know what to expect from their opponents after a tough encounter in Libreville.

Winger Leandra Smeda said: "We played well over there and we managed to get a win, even though we did not have rooms and we did not sleep on mattresses. We are mentally strong and we have a good team spirit."

Smeda said they always keep their heads up and follow the instructions of the coach.

"We did not know anything about them going into the first leg but now we know them. They are physical and they are tall. Technically they are not strong though," she said.

The last time Banyana played in Dobsonville, in April, they hammered Botswana 5-0 in an All-Africa Games qualifier.

"We hope for another good result, which will give us a boost going into the next round of qualification," Smeda said.

Banyana will play Kenya or Botswana if they qualify for the next round of qualifiers.
