Pitso out for top players

Pitso Mosimane has been provocative in response to reports linking Mamelodi Sundowns to several high-profile players who are out of contract at their equally high-profile clubs next month.

The coach left plenty to the imagination by suggesting the Brazilians would be more than happy to raid their direct title rivals in an attempt to strengthen their squad for next season.

The 2014-2015 campaign had barely been wrapped up when transfer targets for Sundowns were being speculated on. Of the many star players set for contract renewal talks at their clubs are Itumeleng Khune, Tefu Mashamaite, Mandla Masango and George Lebese, all from Kaizer Chiefs, while Oupa Manyisa, Thabo Matlaba and Patrick Phungwayo are yet to agree terms with Orlando Pirates.

"I don't know the exact words to use, but if we want to be different we can be different," Mosimane said. "We are going to strengthen the team and we've always gone to Free State Stars, Maritzburg United, Ajax [Cape Town], Santos, Black Leopards and [Lamontville] Golden Arrows, even when they were relegated, to get players."

Khune and Mashamaite are allegedly on their way out of Chiefs because of their hefty demands.

For Sundowns, money has never been an issue.

Mosimane also hit back at the notion that a growing number of players have joined the Brazilians as bright prospects, only for their careers to stall due to a lack of game time.

"People complain and say we kill careers. You hear all these negative stories," Mosimane said.

"But when a player comes to Sundowns, I speak to him. I ask if they know where they are going and if they are aware of the pros and cons of joining the club. I say 'are you sure you will compete and are you sure you will be in the starting line-up?' And the answer is always yes."

Mosimane said there was no player at the club who felt he was not earning enough. "At Sundowns, we change your life. It's the club president's policy to make a humble contribution to any player because football is a short career."
