Awards amaze Tovey, Baxter

STUART Baxter and Neil Tovey were both humbled and taken aback to receive the club's Special Awards from Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung on Wednesday night.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter received high praise from Motaung, being presented the honour for his work done in winning two league and cup doubles in three years, at the Chiefs awards ceremony in Midrand.

Baxter said he realised the significance of receiving a chairman's award, having only been at the club for three years, and given that the other one on the night went to a club legend.

"I said that to my wife, that usually you've got to have been in a club for 20 years, or done something exceptional. I said therefore I realise that Kaizer is thanking me," the Chiefs coach said. "And it was heartfelt, I think, from him. And it was moving for me to receive it.

"Because when I was Bafana coach I would go around the country and engage clubs and coaches, and there were only a few places you really felt it was worthwhile. It was lip service in some places. When I went to Chiefs, Kaizer told me he appreciated it."

Motaung admitted to being emotional when presenting the award to Baxter.

"In the history of Kaizer Chiefs two sports people have become coach of the club," the Chiefs chairman said, "Joe Frickleton in 1984, who won the league and three trophies. Now we have a sportsman who has filled the same footsteps. In three years he has won four trophies."

Tovey, the 1990s Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain, said his award was made more special given how many legends had played for Chiefs.

"You know, there are so many Chiefs legends who have gone before, so to have that honour bestowed on you is immense," Tovey said.

"In 1990, when I joined the club, my aspirations could only be to play for the biggest and best club in the country. There was no international football or Bafana Bafana to aspire to play for."
