Moonsamy puts up debut tourney

Curtis Moonsamy will finally stage his first boxing tournament since getting a promoter's licence last year.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday when he announced his full bill, Moonsamy paid tribute to the City of Joburg which he said made it possible for his Moonlight Boxing Promotions to put together the tournament.

He said his own development tournament, known as Own the Night, would be the first to enjoy live coverage from Soweto TV, which has more than 1.7-million viewers and is broadcast to South African subscribers on DStv.

Moonsamy said his tournament would take place at South Hills Recreation Centre from 7.30pm on Friday.

"I had intended introducing myself to the fight public last year but I could not due to failure to get funding," he said. "Fortunately, we managed to get the City of Johannesburg on board this year and will hit the road running."

Moonsamy explained that it was the plight of professional boxers which brought him to boxing.

"I then discovered that boxers are deprived of tournaments and therefore they cannot advance their careers and have to seek other forms to generate income," he explained.

Topping the bill will be Cebo Ngema and Khayalethu Mbhedje over eight rounds in the bantamweight division.

Ngema makes a comeback since suffering a questionable points loss to Toto Helebe for the national bantamweight title in February last year.

Rising star Ronald Malindi will take on Tebogo Setseke in the bantamweight over four rounds, while Koos Sibiya will face Hamisi Gulaka from Tanzania over six rounds in the junior-lightweight division.
