Calm Baxter says job not done yet

Even with bottles of champagne popping at the final whistle, and throngs of overjoyed Kaizer Chiefs fans invading the pitch, Stuart Baxter barely showed signs of excitement.

The Chiefs coach immediately called for his team to calm down, in spite of having secured the Absa Premiership title with three matches to spare.

"In the dressing room, I told the players the season is not finished," he told a post-match press conference. "We still have three big matches to go."

Perhaps Baxter's stance shows he knew the title was won a long time ago, and that last night's 4-1 romp over Polokwane City was a mere formality.

His reluctance to jump for joy with the rest of the Chiefs fans - some of who were so excited that they literally took over the field - may stem from the manner in which the title was lost to Mamelodi Sundowns last year.

By emphasising Amakhosi still have nine points to play for, Baxter has clearly set his sights on a new title-winning record.

Chiefs can finish on a maximum of 72 points, bettering Sundowns' 65 from last year.

"We have to finish the season in the best possible way. That's why I told the players to hold the celebrations. The champagne must remain on ice.

"If there's a player still celebrating, perhaps he doesn't know the value of representing Kaizer Chiefs," Baxter said.

Baxter's misgivings about celebrations notwithstanding, it was a carnival atmosphere at Soccer City last night, even as the match began on a sombre mood with a moment of silence observed for John Moshoeu, the former Chiefs star who died this week.

The pitch invasion at the end also put a slight blemish on a glorious night for Amakhosi, who may find themselves hauled before the PSL's disciplinary committee.

But, after pocketing R10-million for reclaiming a title they lost painfully to Sundowns last year, they may not care much.
