Phiyega: Police are on top of xenophobic issue

Over 800 police officers are currently dealing with xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu-Natal‚ National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Wednesday.

Addressing media on the sidelines of the police portfolio committee‚ where she and her team were presenting their budget‚ Phiyega said more than 800 officers‚ some from other areas in the country‚ were currently deployed to deal with “the issue of instability in that area”.

She said that more police officers would be brought in if and when the situation called for reinforcements.

She said she believed that the police were winning.

“If you look at our interventions‚ we have moved from Isipingo to Chatsworth to all other areas‚ to the city and this thing is migrating but in all instances we manage to restore stability‚” she said.

She said the violence did not appear to be spreading elsewhere in the country‚ but police would deal with it in a similar fashion if it did.
