Keshi given new contract by Nigeria

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has finally signed a new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, according to reports yesterday.

Keshi has re-signed just in time for a personal grudge match against Bafana Bafana in Nelspruit on Sunday.

According to Nigeria's second-most read newspaper, The National, Keshi was asked to select the squad for the Eagles' two friendlies this week - they hosted Uganda last night - despite being out of contract. But the coach's original list was thrown out.

Despite this, Keshi has ended weeks of speculation about who will coach the Super Eagles, signing a new contract after a federation board meeting yesterday.

Keshi has not had a permanent contract since steering Nigeria to the second round of last year's World Cup in Brazil. He coached the Super Eagles on a match-by-match basis on the request of Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo in this year's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Keshi was offered a deal by the federation earlier this year but rejected it as a "slave contract".

The National reported that Keshi's squad had been turned down by the federation because "it was important not to make the federation look like it was too dependent on his services".

The newspaper alleged: "It was the reason why prominent players that have always made Keshi's list, like Emmanuel Emenike, Ambrose Efe, Chigozie Agbim and Austin Ejide . did not make the list."

It was not clear whether caretaker coach Daniel Amokachi or Keshi would take charge of the match against Bafana on Sunday.

With Keshi having an axe to grind against the South Africans, it seems likely he will be on the touchline at Mbombela Stadium.

Nigeria had to come back from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw against Bafana in Uyo in November - not enough for the African champions to earn a place to defend their crown at the Afcon in Equatorial Guinea in January and February.
