Usuthu take a gamble on Mabizela

No matter how many times controversial defender Mbulelo Mabizela messes up, he always finds a club to rescue him.

Mabizela has joined his 10th club - AmaZulu - and it may not even be his last knowing how quickly things go sour when he's around.

Usuthu have now made the unbelievable decision to give the 34-year-old a contract until the end of the season, even after his contract was terminated by Mpumalanga Black Aces last month following a run-in with coach Clive Barker.

"OJ is doing very well. He has fitted in. He is a quality footballer," Usuthu coach Steve Barker said.

"We have signed him till the end of the season and then we will take things from there and see if we can extend his stay. I am not treating him differently. My job is to get the best out of every player.

"At the end of the day I have signed him because of his ability and I am confident he will bring leadership and a winning mentality to his team. At this stage that's my only focus. I am not looking at his past.

"It sounds like journalists are trying to start something when there is nothing. He loves playing football and he has an opportunity here. He is relishing the challenge," a confident Barker said.

Mabizela was not available for comment.

AmaZulu, who are bottom of the table, will probably be the busiest team in the final week of the transfer window, which closes at 5pm on Friday.

Striker Bongi Ntuli has joined on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns and Barker could also bring in the likes of Wayne Sandilands, Luyolo Nomandela and Asavela Mbekile on loan from Sundowns.
