Booking error KOs R1m title bout

The Orient Theatre, the famed boxing venue in East London, is not available this weekend, so the eagerly-awaited final of the R1-million Premier Boxing League has been postponed.

"We were informed by the Buffalo City booking office that the Orient Theatre is double booked with the annual Iron Man event taking place this weekend," promoter Gabs Mtshala explained yesterday.

"The whole area around Orient Theatre is cordoned off because the event will finish there."

Mtshala said the confusion was caused by an oversight on the part of the Buffalo City booking office. He announced that the final has been moved to February 1.

Mtshala said Aphiwe Mboyiya, who had initially pulled out due to weight problems, was back to face Lwando Molwana.

"This weight thing has been bugging him even in the early stages of the league. Dicksy Ngqula [the brains behind the PBL] spoke to Mboyiya's management after we had postponed the tournament and they assured him that the boy is back," added Mtshala.

The promoter explained that the Xolisani Ndongeni and MacBute Sinyabi will fight for the R1-million top prize. The two are the top two boxers in the tournament, having accumulated the most points throughout the competition.

Ndongeni will fight Vusumzi Tyatyeka in the lightweight division, while Sinyabi takes on Oscar Chauke in the featherweight.

Mtshala said each fighter who tops their division [the tournament was contested in four divisions comprising four boxers fighting in a round-robin format and picking up points accordingly] would be rewarded R200000 in addition to the R180000 they would have earned from their R60000 purse money per fight.
