Manyama brace secures crucial points for SuperSport

Lebogang Manyama struck twice on Sunday, as SuperSport United fought back from a goal down to beat Chippa United 2-1 in Port Elizabeth.

The visitors secured a much needed Premiership victory in their last match before the lengthy mid-season break, climbing three places to 11th in the standings, while Chippa remained eighth in the table.

The Chilli Boys produced a dominant display in the first half, but were unable to capitalise on their fine performance up front.

As early as the fifth minute, David Zulu, playing his last match for Chippa, produced a solo run from his team's own half, outsmarting three defenders.

He stumbled into the box, however, and could not get any power behind a tame strike, which was easily handled by SuperSport goalminder Dumisani Msibi.

George Akpabio then created a similar chance, making a darting run down the right flank, but Msibi ran out and put his body on the line to clear the danger.

Chippa were rewarded, however, for their aggressive approach in the 17th minute.

Zulu's initial left-footed attempt hit the right post, but Akpabio received a neat pass from Mhlengi Cele off the rebound and sliced the ball in to put the home side in front.

The visitors seemed to wake up in the latter stages of the first half, surging forward on the counter-attack, and Manyama equalised six minutes before the break after collecting a loose ball in space and chipping it in from close range.

Taking the momentum into the second period, the SuperSport strike force made their presence felt, with Dino Ndlovu narrowly missing two close opportunities.

Immediately after the interval, Dove Wome delivered a superb cross from the right but a sliding Ndlovu sliced it wide to the left, and six minutes later Zulu received a long pass from David Mathebula but clipped the ball over the crossbar.

With both sides showing intent up front, William Twala had a chance for Chippa shortly after the hour mark, but Msipi tipped his shot over the bar, and Phala fired a header wide for SuperSport.

The visitors snatched three points in the 88th minute when a Phala cross found Manyama, who struck his brace from an angle in the area.

"It's been tough for us, but we had to unite as a team," said Manyama, the Man of the Match.

"This week we worked on getting into the box, getting the crosses in, and fortunately we got two goals from two crosses.

"I think it's a good send-off for our fans for the festive season."
