Modise ignores Chiefs

Teko Modise is not too concerned about Kaizer Chiefs' massive lead at the top of the Absa Premiership.

While Sundowns won 2-1 against Maritzburg United on Tuesday, they find themselves a distant 15 points behind Amakhosi, who earlier in the day beat Free State Stars by the same margin.

"We are not worried with them being unbeaten and we are not worried with them not losing, it is about ourselves," Modise said after being named man of the match against Steve Komphela's side.

"We have been drawing so many games, which has resulted in points dropped.

"We are trying to pick up the points in the games that we can do so in and I hope by the end of the season those points will count. There are [still] so many points to play for," Modise said.

Tuesday's match saw Sundowns resort to negative tactics, such as running down the clock and faking injury, but Modise said this was a way to grind out results.

"Last season we were not stylish and we depended heavily on grinding out results and I am happy we are reverting to what worked for us last season.

"There were eight games on the bounce that we won 1-0 and if we can get that mentality back, it will be good for us. We can see with each and every game we draw that we are missing golden opportunities."

With CAF continental engagements looming for Chiefs and Sundowns in the new year, the importance of having breathing space has become clear.

Modise said the Brazilians will only worry about the Champions League bridge when they get to it but hopes that Sundowns' squad depth will get them through the tournament.

"Some of us have never taken part in CAF club competitions and we are excited by the fact that we will play in the Champions League. We do have a big squad but who plays will be entirely up to the coach," Modise said.
