Venter gets a shot at WBO belt

UNBEATEN Ukrainian cruiserweight prospect Oleksandr Usyk will defend his WBO Intercontinental title against Danie "Tshwane Tornado" Venter in Kiev, Ukraine, on December 13.

Venter's promoter Pieter de Wet confirmed the fight yesterday.

Usyk - who is undefeated after five fights with five knockouts - won the title on October 4 when he stopped vastly experienced South African Daniel "Billy The Kid" Bruwer in the seventh round at the Arena Lviv Stadium in Lviv, also in Ukraine.

In Venter, the 27-year-old Ukrainian will be up against a formidable and durable boxer, who holds the WBF belt. Venter, the 35-year-old former national champion, has 14 knockouts from 19 wins in 25 bouts.

De Wet, who guides the career of Venter under Real Steel Promotions, said the fight will be staged by K2 Promotions, which is owned by Ukrainian boxing legends Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko.

"This is a great opportunity for Danie to showcase his talent in the world," De Wet said.

"He really needs such platforms to show that he is up there among the best. K2 has already indicated a tremendous interest in the good boxers that we have in South Africa."
