Four PSL clubs await CAF draw

TOMORROW is the deadline for admittance to next year's African club competitions with four entries - BidVest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates - from South Africa for the first time since 2010. The clubs now await the draw, which is traditionally done in committee rather than by a drawing of lots.

CAF's club competition's committee, of which PSL chairman Irvin Khoza is a member, debates the various permutations, but the general rule is the draw that has to be "massaged" to avoid too much costly travel in the early rounds.

That is why SA clubs are guaranteed to play regional rivals in the first round, which kicks off straight after the completion of the Africa Cup of Nations finals in February.

The date for the release of the draw is not yet known despite requests to the CAF for information. It is usually the second week of December.

Chiefs and Sundowns, who will compete in the Champions League, play three knockout rounds before the possibility of qualifying for the group stages, which is where the prize money kicks in. In the Confederation Cup, where Pirates and Wits play, there are four knockout rounds before the group stage.
