Kamanga destined for greatness

PROMISING: Paul Kamanga
PROMISING: Paul Kamanga

RISING star fighter Paul "The Natural" Kamanga is destined for greatness.

The 20-year-old enhanced his potential with a stupendous performance against battle-scarred veteran Kaizer "The Animal" Mabuza at Kibler Park Recreation Centre on Saturday.

In the process, Kamanga chalked up the first defence of his WBA All Africa junior welterweight belt. Scores were 114-110 (twice) and 114-111 all in favour of Kamanga who remains undefeated after 13 fights.

"My legs are gone. That's it from me," said Mabuza who could not match a young buck like Kamanga for tempo and hand speed.

Earlier on the night Patrick "The Panther" Mukala caused a scare when he knocked Vhonani Netshidamboni almost through the ropes in their rematch that ended in the first round.

A left uppercut to the jaw violently staggered Netshidamboni backwards and Mukala followed up with two vicious combos that send his foe down. Referee Amos Lusenga was too far from the action to immediately stop the fight. Mukala took advantage and finished Netshidamboni with a menacing right hand.

l Promoter Rodney Berman delivered on the promise of donating R20000 to Thulani Mwelase, the father of fallen female boxer Phindile Mwelase.

An emotional Mwelase said the money came in handy because it enabled him to give his wife, who died after a long illness on Wednesday, a decent funeral at Mashiselweni in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

"Hopefully other boxing promoters will follow Berman because our sons and daughters really do not earn big money. They still do it for the love of it," said Mwelase, whose daughter died 15 days after being in a coma, following a knock-down by Liz Butler in October.
