Muller moves in with Volbrecht

MUSCLE MAN: Kevin 'KO Kid' Lerena
MUSCLE MAN: Kevin 'KO Kid' Lerena

JOHNNY "The Hurricane" Muller has made a lot of sacrifices to avoid distractions ahead of his highly anticipated non-title showdown against Kevin "KO Kid" Lerena at Emperors Palace next Saturday.

Muller is so focused on the fight that he has gone as far as giving up his personal space at home and moving in with his trainer Harold Volbrecht.

"Those sacrifices will pay dividends. I will be victorious and there is no doubt about that," Muller said yesterday.

"I have trained three times a day because Kevin is a good, up-and-coming strong fighter. I have done extra training, lots of power training and eaten the right food. My weight is good. I am now a full-blown cruiserweight and I feel very strong."

Muller campaigns in the light- heavyweight class where he holds the SA and WBC silver title. He will come down a weight division to meet Lerena, the WBF Africa and WBC youth silver cruiserweight champion.

"People must come in big numbers to witness war. They will see a completely new person. I am now a boxer, no more bulldozing," he said.

Muller has fought and beaten many top fighters in his time. He left 12 of his 16 victims counting the stars. He was also stopped twice in four losses.

Lerena is no slouch either and is a muscle mountain who is yet taste defeat after 11 fights. But a confident Muller warned that Lerena has not fought a boxer of his calibre.

Their 10-rounder will form part of the Golden Gloves Promotions Top Guns bill that will mark the return of talented but wayward Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen.

The former undefeated IBO super-middleweight champion will oppose Russian Denis "Drago's Son" Grachev for the vacant WBC international light- heavyweight title.

Meanwhile, promoter Jeff Ellis said Oosthuizen, Muller, Hekkie Budler (WBA and IBO strawweight champion) and Ryno Liebenberg will be at Southgate Mall on Saturday to support the first Chesa Nyama skipping rope competition. The competition is aimed at reintroducing the fistic sport to the public.

Ellis said the winner will pocket R5 000, second place R2 500 and third place R1 000.
