Ajax reset goals after great start

AJAX Cape Town are resetting their ambitions after a strong start to the season has exceeded expectations and a new sponsor has given them cause for quiet confidence.

Coach Roger de Sa said he had set off in the new season with his first priority being to get to 30 points - a nice way of saying he wanted to avoid relegation.

But with Ajax lying second in the Premier Soccer League standings, with 17 points already, the coach said it was time to re-look at what they wanted to achieve in this campaign.

"First I must admit that every coach starts out hoping his side will win the championship, and we are very happy with where we are after nine games," De Sa said.

"Reflecting back on missed chances and some bad luck, we could have been in an even better position, although some other results did also go our way.

"When we started the season, we were one of the only clubs who did not make any new signings and we did not have a sponsor. We just wanted to get to 30 points and bring the kids on.

"But they really developed quickly," admitted De Sa, betraying surprise at how well the Cape Town club has done in recent months after spending the last two seasons in the doldrums.

"What is important for us now is to be able to freshen up our squad in the January transfer window with one or two quality signings."

This, De Sa said, was now possible after a new sponsor was announced earlier this month, reportedly adding R10- million to the club's coffers.

"We are trying to get one or two quality players who will be able to give us a cushion and take the pressure off the rest of the squad.

"You will see again how the top teams with the quality squads show their strength in the second half of the season."

He said Ajax were now a more attractive proposition for quality players. The Urban Warriors boast talented youngsters like Rivaldo Coetzee, Keagan Dolly and Abbubakar Mobara, who have the potential to take the club to greater heights.
