De Sa adds to calls to cancel PSL fixtures

AN emotional Roger de Sa joined the mounting calls for the rest of the weekend's Premier Soccer League programme to be called off in the wake of the killing of Senzo Meyiwa.

The Ajax Cape Town coach told reporters yesterday: "To call the derby off was the right thing to do and I'd like to have had the rest of the programme called off too. I know for myself it has affected me badly and there are many of my players who also played with Senzo who have been touched. They will feel it when they have to play."

Ajax host SuperSport United at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday as the rest of the PSL matches go ahead despite calls from many players from other clubs to also be allowed to show their respects to Meyiwa.

De Sa had Meyiwa as his first-choice goalkeeper when he was at Orlando Pirates and was close to the 27-year-old, tragically killed on Sunday. Even after leaving Pirates at the start of the year, De Sa kept close contact with Meyiwa, speaking to him at least twice a week and meeting him in Johannesburg for an occasional dinner.

De Sa was in tears after yesterday's press conference as he spoke about his relationship with Meyiwa and particularly the adventures they had together in last year's African Champions League.

"I suppose we have to just get on with it but it has been a sad time. There has been a time to mourn and then there will be a time to put it all away and get on with life," he said.

But the PSL has already made it clear all other matches scheduled for this weekend will go ahead as planned. The league has yet to announce a new date for the derby, which was meant to take place on Saturday, with speculation that it will take place on December 20.
