THE SA Football Association yesterday postponed the Bafana Bafana squad announcement and will instead attend the memorial service of the late Senzo Meyiwa.

Bafana coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba was expected to name a 26-man squad to take on Sudan and Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month, but has delayed doing so following the shock death of the national team and Orlando Pirates skipper.

Meyiwa, 27, was shot and killed in Vosloorus on Sunday evening, a day after he had led the Buccaneers to a 4-1 victory against Ajax Cape Town in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals at Orlando Stadium.

A new date for the squad announcement is yet to be confirmed, but Mashaba still has ample time to name his team for the clash against Sudan on November 15 at Mbombela Stadium and the Super Eagles away from home in their final Group A match four days later, although there is uncertainty about that match as Nigeria face a fresh Fifa ban.

"From our point of view, we felt it would be insensitive to carry on with the announcement before Senzo is laid to rest on Saturday. As a result, we decided to postpone the press conference," said Safa spokesman Dominic Chimhavi. "We also wanted to be part of this joint memorial service with Boxing South Africa, Athletics South Africa and Sascoc at the Standard Bank Arena on Thursday [today]."

Mashaba, his technical team and Safa president Danny Jordaan will attend the memorial service for South Africa's three fallen heroes - Meyiwa, Olympic medallist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and female boxer Phindile Mwelase.
