PLATINUM Stars were drawn at home against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout semifinals after beating Kaizer Chiefs 5-3 on penalties yesterday.

Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United are pitted together in the other semifinal tie on the weekend of November 8-9.

The Premier Soccer League conducted the draw just minutes after the end of the last of the quarter-final ties.

Chiefs had only themselves to blame for not taking their chances in a game that marked their first setback of the season. George Lebese was the only player to fail in the penalty shootout as his shot was saved.

Chiefs had numerous chances but spurned them while Stars played a defensive game and were happy to take the game to the lottery of the shootout after two hours without any goals.

Zimbabwean Kingston Nkhatha was set up for the first chance of the game in the 11th minute but hit the side netting with an angled effort that should have tested the goalkeeper.

Some 11 minutes later, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who was not as sharp as usual with his passing, did show that his movement is still top class and glided into the penalty area at the end of a series of clever passes from his teammates but had his effort blocked.

Stars had their only real effort of the first half when Ndumiso Mabena's curling free kick was tipped over by keeper Brilliant Khuzwayo.

Bernard Parker and Nkhatha had more chances before the break but found Siyabonga Mpontshane, restored to the Stars' starting line-up, in position to stop their efforts.

In the 72nd minute Siboniso Gaxa headed over from close range, followed quickly after by Nkhatha again.

Stuart Baxter made a double change early in extra time bringing on Lebese and Siphelehle Mthembu but the best chance fell to Stars' striker Eleazar Rodgers, who was shocked to find himself having beaten the offside trap and alone with Khuzwayo to beat. As a result, he panicked and blasted over the top of the Chiefs' goal.
