The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that the much anticipated Derby will not be played this weekend.

PSL CEO Brandt de Villiers told a media conference that the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has been postponed in the memory of the fallen hero Senzo Meyiwa.

"Out of respect for Senzo, the Derby match will not take place this weekend," said De Villiers.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was shot by robbers who invaded his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's home on Sunday night.

Meyiwa was rushed to hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza said that they wrote a letter on Monday morning requesting the PSL and SA Football Association to postpone the weekend's match.

He said that they made a plea to have the Derby postponed since his burial may take place this weekend.
