Madida keen on Swallows job

FANI Madida would not hesitate if the Moroka Swallows head coach's job was offered to him.

Madida confirmed his interest in the job after his side ended Kaizer Chiefs' record winning run with a 1-1 Absa Premiership draw at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Birds caretaker coach Madida, who has served his time as an assistant at AmaZulu and Swallows, said he would grab a job as head coach with both hands.

Replacing Zeca Marques, who stepped down as Birds coach on the weekend, Madida saw his side end a six-match league and cup losing streak against the club where he made his name.

In doing so Swallows ended a record 15-match winning run in all competitions for Chiefs stretching back to last season.

"Of course I would want it," Madida said of the Birds coaching job. "Because I've been an assistant coach for quite some time now, and I think it's time now if I could get the opportunity."

The prolific striker for Amakhosi in the late 1980s and early 1990s was pleased with the effort shown by Swallows, who had conceded 11 goals in four straight league defeats.

The Birds took the lead against a flat Chiefs through former Amakhosi midfielder Lucky Baloyi in the 28th minute. Reneilwe Letsholonyane equalised in the 67th.

"There was much more enthusiasm from the players. We told ourselves we had to turn it around a bit," Madida said.

"It hasn't been going well, with five defeats in a row. This time around we tried much harder and we definitely came here to try to win, and break Chiefs on their transitions and the counterattack.

"We knew that their two central defenders [Mulomowandau Mathoho and Tefu Mashamaite] are not so pacey, and we tried to take advantage of that. But at times the decision-making of our players was not the best.

"When we scored the goal, you always had the feeling we could breach the net. After that Chiefs dominated the game. And I thought, 'now we are going to be under siege' because Chiefs have been playing good football, and they mesmerised us with their movement of the ball.

"Everyone's been saying Chiefs are like a Gautrain, so I was saying before the game we had to go and take out the cables."

Swallows will meet Platinum Stars at Dobsonville Stadium next Friday.
