Cup not a priority for 'trialist' Mugeyi

TOMORROW is another audition for Wilfred Mugeyi, the AmaZulu caretaker coach who believes he's brought a different dimension to the club following the sacking of Craig Rosslee.

Usuthu travel to Loftus Versfeld Stadium to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout at 5.30pm.

Mugeyi said while his priority was to save the club from the relegation drop, "going all the way" in the cup would be a morale booster.

He argued that he has managed to improve the way AmaZulu play, even though the club has only registered a single win in 10 matches in all competitions this season.

When Usuthu claimed their first victory of the campaign - a 3-2 win over Bloemfontein Celtic - it was Mugeyi who was in charge.

"I know I have worked with Craig before and he had his own ideas, and I have mine. There have been changes since I took over, like in defence where we are stronger and more compact.

"I think going forward we are also a lot more attack-minded," said Mugeyi.

"My mandate is to save the team from the danger zone, but it is also important to win the cup match because it brings confidence."

His counterpart, Pitso Mosimane, cautioned against underestimating a struggling team.

In three previous meetings between the two clubs, Sundowns have managed to score 11 goals, but Mosimane brushed off the statistics.

"Those numbers aren't so relevant now. We must be careful of a team that has a new coach because we have seen how that helped improve Chippa United and, maybe, even Moroka Swallows."
