IT'S the end of the road for Moroka Swallows' beleaguered coach Zeca Marques, who announced his decision to quit after his team's 2-3 loss to Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.
"This is my last game with the team," he told his players in the dressing room.
He confirmed to Sowetan yesterday that he had indeed made the statement.
"Yes, I made that statement."
When asked what was he going to do next, he said he did not know what the future held for him. Although club boss Leon Prins could not be reached for comment yesterday, one of the directors, who did not want to be named, confirmed that the departure of the coach was imminent.
"It is understandable as the man has been under pressure because the team is not performing."
The fans have also been baying for his blood, and the loss to AmaZayoni was the last straw.
Meanwhile, disgruntled Swallows supporters waved placards bearing the names of Prins and general manager Sipho Xulu. Some of the placards read: "We don't want Leon Prince and Sipho Xulu", and "Prins Leave Swallows".
Yesterday, Xulu said he was surprised that his name has been included in the whole sage. "I think the whole thing is personal and it is not happening for the first time.
"I want people to come forward and register their grievances with us. Holding placards at the stadium is not the right way to go. Our doors are always open to whoever wants to speak to us."
Saturday's setback was Swallows' sixth in a row in all competitions and are out of the top-eight bracket. The Birds take a short trip to FNB Stadium to engage Kaizer Chiefs in a league match on Wednesday night.
In other matches on Wednesday, Maritzburg United travel to Atteridgeville for a meeting with Gordon Igesund's SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Both sides go into the encounter spirited after winning at the weekend. The Team of Choice walloped Platinum Stars 3-1 at home, while Matsatsantsa thumped cross-town rivals University of Pretoria 3-0 at Tuks Stadium.
