Stix Morewa Challenge going strong

THE Clinix Stix Morewa Soccer Challenge 2014 edition was launched yesterday.

The aim of the tournament, staged with Safa's Soweto region, is to honour the memory of the late Solomon "Stix" Morewa, who was Safa's president in the 1990s. He was also the marketing director of Clinix Health Group.

In its eighth year the tournament has grown, with 1200 teams taking part this year.

Safa president Danny Jordaan, who was the keynote speaker at the launch at the Lesedi Private Clinic in Soweto, said the association "is committed to ensuring that there must be an increased emphasis on the improvement of youth teams and women's football".

"If there was no Stix, there would be no football. He was very instrumental in the unity that we enjoy in football today. It was a great pleasure to work with him," said Jordaan.

"We are creating opportunities for these youngsters because back in the days of Stix there was Chappies Little League. There were also under-17 and under-19 tournaments, which have since faded and we need to revive them. "This tournament is a kind of commitment we need to tell the youngsters that next year there is another opportunity and I believe this is the kind of message Stix would have wanted to pass forward - that we are committed to grassroots."

The tournament will see the number of women teams growing from six to 12. A round-robin format will also be used for the first time.

The tournament kicks off on Sunday and the finals will take place on November 30 at Nike Sports Centre in Klipspruit, Soweto.
