Stars set to sign Mabunda

FREE State Stars are on the verge of signing Tiyani Mabunda after a period on trial with the club, general manager Rantsi Mokoena revealed yesterday.

The midfielder is a free agent after terminating his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns. Mabunda has been at Stars for the past fortnight having already been linked with the club in August when Sundowns were looking to loan him.

Since then he has agreed to end his contract with the league champions, who signed him from Black Leopards in a deal that tied him to Sundowns until 2016 with the option of a further one season extension. But the 26-year-old Mabunda played just 32 minutes for Sundowns last season, with ironically his last appearance coming against Stars in Phuthaditjhaba in March.

His signing will likely come too late for him to be considered for the Telkom Knockout tie away against SuperSport United on Saturday in Atteridgeville.
