BENEDICT Vilakazi became a victim of a cruel prank when he received a phone call offering him a contract that would have reignited his career.

Vilakazi, the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfield kingpin, has been struggling to find a club after he returned to South Africa following a stint in Botswana.

Last week, he thought his prayers had finally been answered when he received a call, supposedly from Bloemfontein Celtic chairman Max Tshabalala offering him a contract. 'Tso' packed his bags and headed to Bloemfontein.

On arrival at the Bram Fischer Airport, he allegedly called Celtic chief executive Khumbulani Konco to come pick him up, only to be told the call he had received was not from Tshabalala.

"It is true that he was in Bloemfontein after being misled into thinking that the chairman would offer him a contract. He called saying he was at the airport and I immediately realised that he had been misled. I went to pick him up, offered him accommodation at the club house and the following day, he went back to Johannesburg," Konco said.

He said coach David Notoane also almost fell victim to a similar scam, but luckily he called Celtic first.

Vilakazi refused to comment.
