Advantage Lusikisiki fighters

SIMPHIWE KHONCO

PROFESSIONAL boxers from Lusikisiki will enjoy territorial advantage for the first time in their careers, thanks to the opportunities that will be presented by promoter Ntsikayesizwe Sigcawu tomorrow.

Sigcawu's event, which is made up of 11 bouts, will be the first professional boxing tournament to take place in that part of the Eastern Cape.

Lusikisiki boxers usually have to travel to East London, some 400km away, to gain any measure of recognition.

This logistical challenge did not sit well with Sigcawu.

He explained: "I realised that I needed to do something for local boys.

"I then started promoting in all the areas. I am of the opinion that local fighters here in Lusikisiki also deserve to enjoy territorial advantage.

"I am delighted that I will be able to not only give them the chance to fight at home but also provide action right here for the fans."

Sigcawu was able to produce credible boxers like Simpiwe Khonco in his previous development tournaments in other parts of the Eastern Cape. Khonco went on to win the SA and WBA mini flyweight titles.

Interestingly, Sigcawu's tournament tomorrow at Lusikisiki Teachers Training College will feature only one boxer from the promoter's stable.

That boxer is Hlanga Kanzi from Dutywa, who will meet Simphiwe Ntshangase from Dimbaza in the featherweight class. All bouts are over four rounds.

They feature fighters from Lusikisiki, Mthatha, Kei Mouth, Cofimvaba, Scenery Park, Bloemfontein, Mdantsane, Duncan Village and Port Alfred.

Sigcawu will be assisted by Ingquza Hill municipality.

Fans will pay R40 (adults) and R20 (children) and the action will begin at 1pm.
