'Nothing, not even the derby, beats ACL final'

MENACE : Bucs winger Daine Klate
MENACE : Bucs winger Daine Klate

IT'S a match that brings South Africa to a standstill, but for Daine Klate, there's something bigger than the Soweto Derby.

As Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs prepare to face off in Saturday's MTN8 final, Klate commented yesterday that the match between the Soweto giants is some way short of eclipsing his CAF Champions League experience.

The Pirates midfielder played for Bucs as they lost to Al-Ahly in front of a hostile, raucous crowd in Cairo in November last year, falling short of matching the heroics if the 1995 side that conquered Africa.

"For me there's something bigger than the derby... the African Champions League. I was there last year when we played Al Ahly in Cairo and it was an unbelievable experience. When we walked out on to the pitch all we could hear were the Ahly fans singing. There was not a single Pirates fan in sight, unlike in the derby. The Champions League is really a bigger stage."

The left winger said he expected Saturday's clash with Chiefs in Durban to be a thriller.
