WBF avoids 'meaningless titles'

THE World Boxing Federation will not have all "meaningless" titles that confuse the public when it comes to recognising a world champion in a weight division.

This was said by re-elected WBF president Howard Goldberg yesterday.

The Cape Town-based former boxing referee and judge, who was re-elected at the organisation's executive board meeting in Germany last weekend, has pledged to bring back integrity to the sport.

He said the WBF will achieve its objective by keeping the number of belts to a minimum.

"They are the world, international, intercontinental and regional titles," he said.

"There will be no meaningless titles that the public does not know. We do not believe in stupid titles like the youth, interim, silver, super and blue belts because it is all rubbish.

"The public gets confused. It does not know who the real champion is because you end up having more than five so-called champions in each weight division."

The WBF has four South African world champions - Danie Venter (cruiserweight), Zolani Marali (junior welterweight), Lwandile Sityatha (junior bantamweight) and Luyanda Nkwankwa (minimum- weight).

Nkululeko Mhlongo and Bongani Mlotshwa captured international middleweight and junior middleweight straps two weekends ago. Daniel Bruwer holds the international cruiserweight belt, while Kevin Lerena is the Africa junior heavyweight champion.

"Our intention is to help South African boxing by giving local boxers opportunities," said Goldberg whose vice-president is Jean Marcel Nartz from Germany.

Goldberg described his organisation as arguably the No1 sanctioning body when it comes to the development of women's boxing.
